अग्रलेखांचा बादशहा हरपला!
दैनिक `नवाकाळ’चे संपादक म्हणून अनेक वर्षे मराठी पत्रकारितेमध्ये आपला ठसा उमटविणारे, सर्वसामान्यांचे विषय घेऊन अतिशय साध्यासोप्या भाषेमध्ये अग्रलेख लिहिणारे नीळकंठ खाडिलकर यांचे आज पहाटे अल्पशा आजाराने निधन झालं आणि मराठी पत्रकारितेमधील एक युगप्रवर्तक व्यक्तिमत्व काळाच्या पडद्याआड गेलं.
नीळकंठ खाडिलकर यांचा जन्म ६ एप्रिल ६ १९३४ रोजी झाला. ज्येष्ठ नाटककार आणि ‘केसरी’ चे माजी संपादक कृ. प्र. खाडिलकर यांचे ते नातू होते. संपूर्ण अर्थशास्त्र हा विषय घेऊन ते बी.ए. ऑनर्स झाले होते. खाडिलकर हे दैनिक `नवाकाळ’चे अनेक वर्षे संपादक होते. महत्त्वाच्या घडामोडींवर त्यांनी अग्रलेखांमधून भाष्य केलं. त्यांनी घेतलेल्या अनके मुलाखती अतिशय गाजल्या. त्यांनी आपल्या तर्कशुद्ध आणि संदर्भासहित लेखणीमधून इतिहासाची मांडणी करत वाचकांचे प्रबोधन केले. त्याचप्रमाणे वर्तमानातील सामाजिक राजकीय परिस्थितीचे अभ्यासू विवेकी विवेचन साध्यासोप्या भाषेमध्ये वाचकांसमोर मांडले.
नीलकंठ खाडिलकर यांनी अग्रलेखाची भाषा कशी साधीसोपी सर्वसामान्य वाचकांना समजणारी असावी, याचा धडा मराठी पत्रकारांना दिला. छोटी छोटी वाक्यरचना, साधेसोपे शब्द वापरून संदर्भासहित विवेकवादी भूमिका अग्रलेखातून मांडत असताना त्यांनी वाचकांच्या मनातील मत अगदी कौशल्याने मांडले. वाचक त्यांचे अग्रलेख वाचण्यासाठी आतुर व्हायचे. हीच त्यांची खासियत ते गेल्यानंतरही निरंतर टिकून राहणारी आहे. सर्वसामान्य मतदारांना वाटणारे राजकारणाविषयीचे मत ते ठामपणे मांडत होते. सत्ताधाऱ्यांवर आसूड ओढून सर्वसामान्य जनतेचे प्रतिनिधित्व त्यांनी खर्या अर्थाने केले. म्हणूनच ते `अग्रलेखांचे बादशाहा’ होते.
टॉवर्स, संत तुकाराम, द्रौपदी (नाटक), महात्मा गांधी, यशस्वी कसे व्हाल?, राजे शिवाजी, रामायण, शूरा मी वंदिले, श्रीकृष्ण, हिंदुत्व; अशी अनेक पुस्तके त्यांनी लिहिली. त्यांनी लिहिलेल्या अग्रलेखांचे संग्रह सुद्धा प्रसिद्ध झाले. हे सर्व साहित्य निळकंठ खाडिलकर यांच्या लेखणीचे सामर्थ्य प्रकट करीत राहणार आहे. त्याचप्रमाणे दैनिक `नवाकाळ’ आणि नीळकंठ खाडिलकर यांचे नाते नेहमीच अतूट राहणार आहे. नाट्याचार्य खाडिलकर यांनी दैनिक `नवाकाळ’ची स्थापना स्वातंत्र्यपूर्व काळात ७ मार्च १९२३ रोजी केली. ब्रिटिश सरकारविरुद्ध `नवाकाळ’मधून प्रसिद्ध झालेले अग्रलेख स्वातंत्र्यलढ्याचा एक अतूट भाग आहे. ९ फेब्रुवारी १९२९ रोजी इंग्रज सरकारने राजद्रोहाचा खटला भरला आणि संपादक असलेल्या नाट्याचार्य खाडिलकरांना एक वर्ष साधी कैद व दोन हजार रुपये दंडाची सजा झाली. सजा भोगण्यासाठी जाताना त्यांनी `नवाकाळ’चे संपादकपद आपले ज्येष्ठ पुत्र यशवंत कृष्णा उर्फ आप्पासाहेब खाडिलकर यांच्याकडे सोपविले. काकासाहेब तुरुंगातून आल्यानंतर पुन्हा संपादक पद घेतले नाही. त्यानंतर आप्पासाहेब खाडिलकरांनी आपल्या वयाच्या ६४ व्या वर्षी म्हणजेच १ ऑक्टोबर १९६९ रोजी विजयादशमीला नीळकंठ खाडिलकर यांचे नाव संपादक, मुद्रक, प्रकाशक म्हणून जाहीर केले. नीलकंठ खाडिलकर यांनी वयाच्या ६३व्या वर्षी १९९७ साली मार्चमध्ये ‘नवाकाळ’ चे संपादकपद सोडले. त्यांची कन्या सौ. जयश्री रमाकांत-पांडे हिला संपादक, मुद्रक व प्रकाशन म्हणून जाहीर केले. त्यानंतर डिसेंबर १९९८ मध्ये ‘संध्याकाळ’चे संपादकपद सोडले. सर्वांत लहान कन्या रोहिणी नीलकंठ खाडिलकर हिला संपादकपद दिले. सर्वांत पहिली कन्या वासंती उन्नी हिला व्यवस्थापक केले.
`नवाकाळ’चा इतिहास खाडीलकर घराण्याने संपन्न केला. भविष्यातही नवाकाळची पत्रकारिता समर्थपणे अधिकाधिक पुढे जाणार आहे? कारण नीलकंठ खाडिलकर यांनी जे कार्य करून ठेवलेले आहे त्यातून नवाकाळाचा पाया अतिशय मजबूत आणि कधीही न ढासळणारा असा निर्माण झाला आहे. नीळकंठ खाडिलकर यांच्या कर्तुत्वाला सलाम. त्यांना भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली!
